Letter 1
Dear Felipe
We haven’t been sending letters since a while so I thought I could send one to you, hope you have been okay, I have been perfectly okay. I remember last time you asked me about how everything is here, so I will start with how my neighbourhood is and my house.

Here I am at home, me and fifteen other people live here, we live in 2 bed rooms and 2 bathrooms for all of us. It’s really dirty hear, but well all my friends also live like this, there some people that are very rich that live in huge house, but I think to myself that I probably am happier like this. Outside of my house, at the entrance door, there is garbage; I can see mice digging in the garbage. There is also a strange smell I think it is from the market; they must have fish of last week, going rotten. The milk man just came by to pass us our milk for the week, it is not much milk for all of us but it is something to give us energy and all the minerals and nutrients the milk gives to your body. Some days the bakery man comes and leaves fresh bread for us, this bread finishes in some days.

Now I will go and play with some of my friends outside, as hear inside is so full of people, yesterday a meet a new kid called Jonathan, he just moved hear some weeks ago, he says he is from California, I will now more about him today.

Hope you will be ok

 Letter 2
Dear Felipe,
How have you been? I have being excellent, as yesterday my neighbour, as always took me to see a show. The show was about a family, which if they went broken in the 1929 depression, the state will take away there kids. At first I got scared, but then, I thought it was really a show, and it wasn’t really truth.
I really enjoyed on Saturday playing checkers, with some friends of mine, I think is one of the best games ever. In some time more I will go and listen to the radio, because at 7 o’clock they will put on some of my favourite music, and at 9 o’clock they will give the news, and I want to know how our country is after the great crisis of 1929.

I didn’t know if I have told you but, my dad works in a factory which makes cardboard boxes, he makes 10 dollars a week, with that we need to live all the week as my mom doesn’t, work, these ten dollar, which aren’t enough for the week, we need to be careful in what we waste it, as we can finish note been able to eat some times. I have a friend, that neither her father or mother works, they get food from the garbage, I feel some times sorry for her so I give her some times some of my food.
Hope you have a great day
You’re sincerely Matthew

Dear Felipe,
I just came back from school, I had a great time with my friends, I still don’t eat anything today, I am starving, but I will have something to eat now. Today, after school, when I came walking home with some friends, we saw some Negros walking at the same side of the road than us, so he had to cross the street, it very dangerous pass beside some Negros, they can do something to you. In school I am one of the best students, I normally get A’s, the teacher always congratulates me because of this, as for me is very difficult to study ass I don’t have enough money to buy my text books, so I go and study to a friend’s house, which has all the book that we use in school, also as I go to my friends house I help them to study for them to get good grades as I get.

Hope you have a great month

Letter 4
Dear Felipe,
After winning the world war, USA lent money to other countries, because they didn’t have any to fix the damages of the war. But after this the 1929 crisis came and left the USA very badly economically, and took other countries down in South America.
In the case of my family this affected very much the economy of my house, as my mom lost her job, and in the factory my dad works they are paying them less, it’s very difficult to live in these days. My mom buy less food, she never buy clothes for me, so I use old clothes that are all rip off. Also, I don’t have any money to buy a ball to play in the street, well it is also very dangerous to play in the streets, as the negro’s can do something to us. The radios in these days has been my main mean of entertainment, I listen to music, news of the world, books, show, etc. I pass a great time of the day listening to it, this radio was a great investment for my parents, as they are very expensive, but they were saving for 6 months to buy it, and finally we were able to buy it, I tell my dad is one of the best buys ever, as I enjoy it so much.
Hope you will be okay
Matthew

Speaking activity

Our speaking activity was about Jargon and Argot

Argot: a specialized language or set of idioms used by a particular group. And they use the very example we mentioned--thieves' argot. But in the next definition we have 'slang or jargon used by a particular group.'

Jargon: Whoa! Yes, it is a specialized or technical language of a trade, profession or similar group. But it can also mean nonsensical, meaningless, incoherent talk. Or a hybrid language, like pidgen. Or having a pretentious vocabulary, convoluted phrasing, and vague meaning.

In this activity we explained how Jargon and argot was in the society and how it was being used, analyzing a text where we saw how the youth people would write and talk. Also a video where there was present specific language.

English Interview

Teacher: Fergus McAteer
Group composed by:
·         Matthew Faille
·         Mati Valenzuela

Questions:
1.      What happens when one language comes into contact with another on?
Depends of the context, for example English, has become a main language of power so when it gets into contact with another one this language dominates the other one. For example when English went into contact with the Indian language, English stayed predominating.
2.    Why is bilingualism so important in these days?
The expansion of the world, as result of the world today that everything is so near reefer to distances, as in my case I took only 1 day to come here and in other ages I would of taken 3 months. And people that are bilingualism can take this opportunity that are in every corner of the world, because someone that knows English can only go to Europe, New Zealand, Australia, EEUU and Canada, but of you know Spanish you can go to south America and other pleases. And also, the more you know the more power you have.
3.    Do you agree with “English language is nobody’s property”?
When you learn a language the language comes with its specific mind set, there was a Kenai   writer called Nungonio, he wrote strongly and that it is that the language makes you think a certain way, and after writing that he stopped learning and talking the language. As far of any body’s property, it’s not for me to diced, it’s better for someone that lives in another colonies that talks Spanish or a dialect of English, but also that the person has to diced for himself and create an opinion of who they are.
4.    If Chile accept Mapuches more, would people know Mapuches native language or it would be like now that nobody knows Mapuches language?
These days there is a possibility, but as there is so much people who talk Spanish people are learning it because its much more important, but for example there is a company of Mapuches that only talk Mapudungun, people would be interested to get to the power, language follows economic power and extent.

5.    Do you think that Chilean people need to learn English in school?
Yes, because they really need English to be able to now live in life as they need it for their future work, to communicate with other countries, and also because every day, as I said before the distances are shorter and every time we work with other parts of the world, so we follow the economic line, but I will say that it would help but not obligatory.
6.    As Chilean Spanish borrows more words from English and new half words, will it become its own new language? For example: Cachai
There is a possibility, al thought Chilean language is very special, and also that its one of the worst class of Spanish, because it has lots of slang.

7.    Referring to the last question will this affect this culture?
Probably, it’s hard to predict, in 200 years you will see that the south of Chile would be a shifting of language, Spanish with Germanic. And in every part of Chile, would be different, the type of Spanish.

The day it rained chocolate

In the Kingdom of Moana, there was a king that was hated by everybody, because in the past he had been very bad to the people that lived in that Kingdom, but he wanted to change how the people of his Kingdom thought about him, so he though in something that would be very special for him and that could be very special for the people of his  Kingdom, so he called a local wizard, to help him to achieve what he wanted, so he told the wizard “ I want for chocolate to fall from the sky” so the wizard asked him back to assure himself, “ so you want for me to make the sky rain chocolate” the King answered “exactly”, so the wizard started thinking how to make a potion that made the sky rain chocolate, so finally after some weeks, he finished doing the potion that made the sky rain chocolate, so the day came that the sky was going to rain chocolate, so the King called all the people that lived in that Kingdom to see what was going to happened, so he said some words to the people that were there, “ as I have being so bad in the past, today I am going to make al does bad things in great things” so in that moment the wizard started to evaporate the potion, and after 5 minutes, chocolate started falling from the sky, so the people got so happy that made a great party for the king and for what he had done, for the Kingdom

IPad is dominating the market of tablets

IPad started as the only tablet in the market, but this wasn’t for a long period of time, this is because other tablets went in to the market, tablets like Samsung Galaxy tab, Huawei S7, V9, ZTE. These came in with a lot of power in to the market as they were comparable with the IPad. Although people still prefer IPad because of its style, sensibility, applications, games. Etc.
Although there are some differences, IPad is a more structured, easy to use, nice looking, but it also has some things that people don’t like, as it is ITunes, lots of people think that iTunes is very difficult to use, and it is very difficult and demands lots of time to synchronize ITunes with your IPad, IPod ore IPhone, another thing that consumers don’t like about the IPad is that you can’t reallypreograme it as you want.
In the case of the other tablets as it is the galaxy tab, V9, Huawei S7, and the other mentioned before, there are more free to use,  as you are able to change your operating system, there are two most known operating systems for tablets as the ones mentioned before, these are the operating system of windows and Android, between these two the best is android, because of its open source, as you can do whatever you want with it, change configurations, but it also has something bad that fanatics of IPads always criticises that it will never be  able to have the same amount of applications, or as simple as it never will be able to have applications as good as the ones that the IPad has. In the case of windows it is good but not so good as android or the IPad as it has a bad reputation as it has had problems with viruses.
In conclusion IPad is the best seller in the market, because of its characteristics, and because its competitions are not at the same level as this one. IPad is better for people that don’t want to see much the configurations of the tablets, and the other tablets are for people that prefer to have a very personal tablet, programmed as they want,  but not with so many applications. If you want to buy a tablet, you don’t need to buy an IPad, because you can choose between the other tablets that cost the same ore are sometimes cheaper than the IPad, and probably the other tablets better and more useful than the IPad, although the IPad will still be preferred by the people of the twenty first century.

Rush Hour on Information Super Highway?

The source of the news is Fox news
In USA tablets, like the Ipad, are using all its bandwidth, this is because there are to many tablets using the internet at the same time, this you can compare it with a traffic jam. The bandwidth of USA was created for laptops only and knows it’s being used by lap tops and tablets.

This story has a few things that I think make it a little bias:
1) The choice of words and the tone of the reporters makes this out to be a disaster, but in reality it is not, it a a problem but not a disaster. a disater would be a nuclear war but not the internet being slow.

2) The story gives the statistic that 50,000,000 tablet PC's are estamated to be sold in the USA in the next year.

3) The peice of news was in the front page when I found it so lots of people will see it. This could mean it could make people angry.

4)The internet is being made faster and larger all the time with new fibre optic cables and faster computers so as long as these continue to be put in place faster than the growth in use of these hand held devices the problem should be containable.

Finally the story is not quite focused on one specific subject as it starts off by saying the we are running out of bandwidth and moves on to the speed of WI-FI and the same problem there.

Postmodernism

Questions of reality and being human rise with power at the end os the century. What dies it mean to be a human? How do human beings fit into the vast cosmos?Where to from here? This are some questions that the end of modernism.
To answer this questions we need to look what came before, in the age of modernism.
In the religously way thre was a new religion calles Judeo-Christian, that replaced the traditional beliefs in god.
Also science had developed, as the creation of stem engine, the harnessing of electricity, and darwins evolutionary theory, this changed the social conscieusness of man, with racional foundations.
The postmodernism, is characteristic for diferent reasons,
-The quest for truth is lost cause
-A person's sense od identity is composite
-The languages of our culture
-Realityos created by those who have power
-We should neutralizethe political power inherent in language
Some examples are:
-A different way of looking at life, for example we live with air, before we didn't know what air was, but now we want to know what air is.
-We don't only look at our selfs now but we look at other people, a more worldwide view
Personal Identity
-Sense of uncertainty about how to understand onseself
Education and academincs
We donde really know anything we rather interpret everythin.
Popular Media
-Media, presents a fictional reality, and a reality.
In conclusion, postmodernism influences our lives, as a individual and social level
